Schema Therapy

Schema Therapy is an integrative, evidence-based approach that brings together cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), attachment theory and psychodynamic principles to address long-standing patterns in thinking, feeling and behaviour. These patterns — known as schemas — often develop early in life and can shape how a person relates to themselves and others in ways that feel deeply ingrained and difficult to shift, even with insight or effort.

Schema Therapy can be particularly helpful for personality-related difficulties, complex or developmental trauma, chronic anxiety or depression, ongoing relationship challenges, and difficulties that have not responded well to shorter-term therapies.

Rather than focusing only on current symptoms, Schema Therapy works at a deeper level. It explores where unhelpful patterns come from, often tracing them back to unmet emotional needs in childhood or adolescence, and supports the development of healthier, more adaptive ways of relating to yourself and the world. For many people, it provides an explanation for why they keep finding themselves in the same situations or emotional states, despite genuinely wanting things to be different.
